Basically you get sun burn on your eyes! If you look at it for long enough or through a lens, this can cause permanent damage.

Our eyes have evolved to let us see what we need in order to survive, so in normal daylight we can spot our food and avoid bumping into things. When we look directly at the sun however it is much too bright and our eyes can’t cope, so it hurts and we would damage them. There is only a limited range of lights that it is possible to make an eye to work with. Other animals have different ranges, so those that live in really dark places can see much better in dim light than us, but it would hurt their eyes to see in bright daylight when our eyes would be fine.
