At School, I did maths, physics and chemistry A-level because I thought I wanted to be an engineer of some sort. But I soon realised that I was actually more interested in living things, and how they work, rather than machines and the cosmos. So I ended up doing a medical biochemistry degree, which was a good way to move back in that direction, without having Biology A-level. I would say that you should always try and do what it interesting to you. Science careers are not always really well paid, but I think it is probably one of the most interesting and fulfilling jobs you can do (although I am a bit biased).
