• Question: do you have to love science to do it

      No, but it helps. There are some areas of science where you can make lots of money if you’re clever and you don’t really care about what you work on. But one of the reasons lots of us do science is because we care about what we’re doing and think its worthwhile and we love doing it. Like the area I’m in, I don’t earn that much money, but I have people who pay to fly me all over the world and pay my expenses for things because they like what I do. If you love what you do then you end up giving it your all and people recognise that and give you opportunities so you get to do more cool stuff. I think that’s true whatever profession you’re in.

      I think it’s quite hard to do science if you don’t love it. With my work you have to be very motivated. There’s not someone checking your working all the time and no one sets you specific tasks to do. To be motivated enough to drive your own work forward relies on you being passionate about what you do. Though there are lots of jobs based on science that you probably don’t need the same passion to do, those that don’t involve research specifically for example.
