It’s a strategy to conserve energy when food is scarce. They eat lots and lots when there is food around (in the summer) and then go to sleep for winter, so that they don’t have to spend more energy looking for food than they can find in winter when there’s not much around. Sleeping takes up a lot less energy so they just live off that they’ve stored during summer.
