It kind of depends on your job. If you’re a scientist at university, you could be called successful based on how well your students do when you teach them and how many scientific papers you publish (how many new things you discover).

If you work for a company, it might be how many new technologies or methods you can invent or how many business clients you can help to keep within the law for their building developments etc.

If you work for the government you might be successful if you help create collaborations in other countries on big projects (like the satellites I use for example). Or maybe by helping implement good water quality measurements, so that people can have safe water to drink.

There’s a lot of ways, but for me personally being successful is finding out new things and communicating these to other people (businesses, the public and other scientists) and to do this you just have to be dedicated and passionate about your subject.
