Mostly I spend a lot of time on my computer, processing pictures taken from space! I develop ways of using thes pictures to understand what is in the ocean and how this changes on a daily, monthly and yearly (and many yearly!) basis. This can help us to understand how much oxygen the ocean provides us with, how much carbon dioxide it takes up, how many fish there are likely to be in the sea and if the water contains anything that could harm people. I also have to go out on boats to take measurements in the sea itself, to check if my estimates from space are correct.
When I’m not working on my specific research I teach more general ocean science to university students and school kids.
I collect and analyse data on lots of different health related problems like obesity, heart attacks, flu and MRSA. I give talks to other scientist about my work and non-scientist. I do computer programming and write report and articles. I also do some fun science writing for newspapers and magazines. I travel and work with people from all over the world on new problems. Some times I just look out of the window or at Facebook.
