Cycling 100 miles along the great wall of china through the desert on the boarder of Inner Mongolia! I didn’t speak any chinese and I met lots of people who had never even seen a foreigner before! I did it to raise money for the orangutan and elephant conservation projects I worked for when I traveled around the world the year after I left school.
I think doing my PhD in another country has been my biggest challenge. I moved away from all my family and friends, which was quite scary and I miss them a lot. The work can be hard at times, though it is always interesting, so I have to keep myself motivated even when I’m tired or get stuck on a problem. I’m hoping to write up my research this year and hand it in to the university. If they think it is good enough they will give me a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) qualification and then I will be Dr Hayley!
