• Question: what was the first country?

      Hmm I don’t know that one, but as countries are defined by boundaries there would probably have to be at least two countries so that people had something to call different. People originated in Africa (I think around where Ethiopia is now) so the first countries were probably there.

      A long time ago (millions of years!) the continents of the world looked very different – they were all bunched together in to a super continent which we’ve named Pangaea – so maybe you could argue that was the first country! But I’m not sure which of the current countries was first recognised as a country and named…I think the first civilisations that recorded their history and would have thought about naming a place a country were probably in the middle east – so maybe Iran or somewhere could be thought of as the first country.
