The most well supported theory is that involving the impact of a huge meteorite. Evidence around the world shows deposits of a rare substance called iridium at about 65 million years ago, which it is thought came from a meteorite about 10km across! An impact crater matching this was found in Mexico. It’s estimated that this impact would be equivalent to about 2million of the most powerful bombs we have today. It’s thought that dust from the impact blocked out the sun, preventing photosynthesis and removing food sources for animals. Fires would also have been very widespread. Most dinosaurs wouldn’t have been able to survive this, but its thought some did and eventually evolved in to our modern birds.
