• Question: Why does evergreen always stay green but other plants don't?

      most plants basically hibernate over the winter because there isn’t enough sunlight and water for them to make much energy. It is therefore best for them to lost their leaves to stop them losing more water, and shut down until Spring comes. The Evergreens on the other hand have evolved special leaves (i.e. pine needles) that don’t lose as much water so the tree keeps hold of them, giving it the advantage that it doesn’t need to grow new ones each spring and can grow throughout the winter. The disadvantage however is that pine needles have much less surface than other leaves and are therefore less good in the summer.
