The sea is salty because salts from weathering of rocks are washed in to it by rivers. Salt also comes from the bottom of the ocean too – at ocean ridges there is volcanic activity which helps circulate water in to and out of the crust. This circulation combined with formation of new rocks all the time, helps keep the oceans saltiness surprisingly constant!

      Great question 🙂
